Fractions on the Real Line

This activity should be used in conjunction with the following lesson on TaskStream:

Introduction to Fractions

The students should already have completed the activity under differentiated instruction using PlayDoh to construct their fractions.

Begin by drawing a real line on the black board. Make it at least 4 feet long. Place -1, 0, and 3 on the line so that your students get a feeling for the location of the integers.
Invite the reporter from group 1 to post 1/1 on the real line. Let the class discuss the positioning of the point so that it is right for future postings.
Invite the reporter from group 5 to post 1/5 on the real line. Let the class discuss the positioning of the point so that it is right for future postings.
Invite the reporter from group 3 to post 1/3 on the real line. Let the class discuss the positioning of the point so that it is right for future postings.

Now you can invite the reporters from groups 2 and 4 in either order. The idea here is to make them serialize by insertion rather than by by going in decreasing or increasing order.
